Aleksandr Chumakov | Physics | Research Excellence Award

Prof. Dr. Aleksandr Chumakov | Physics | Research Excellence Award

B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics National Academy of Sciences of Belarus | Belarus

Professor A. N. Chumakov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, is a distinguished physicist renowned for his pioneering contributions to laser–plasma interaction research. A graduate of the Physics Faculty at the Belarusian State University, he began his scientific career in 1971 at the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, where he has since built an influential body of work shaping modern understanding of laser-induced plasma dynamics. His research has been central to establishing the fundamental mechanisms governing pulsed near-surface optical discharges generated in gases under laser irradiation. Through systematic experimental and theoretical studies, he identified the formation patterns of these discharges across diverse parameter ranges and material surfaces, including metals and composites. His work also introduced innovative methods for manipulating plasma composition and emission characteristics, significantly advancing both laser-processing technologies and spectrochemical material analysis. These contributions have enabled the development of next-generation laser-plasma devices with enhanced precision and functional control. In recognition of his groundbreaking investigations into plasmadynamic processes during laser irradiation of metals and composite materials, Professor Chumakov received the prestigious State Prize of the Republic of Belarus in Science in 1992. Continuing to push scientific boundaries, his current research explores the combined influence of plasma and bichromatic laser radiation on material transformations. He has authored more than 300 scientific publications and holds 18 patents, reflecting his long-standing innovation in the field. His work is further strengthened through international collaborations with leading institutions, including the University of Belgrade and major research centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
