Evgeny Nikolaevich Nikolaev completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (PhysTech), where he specialized in the chemistry of fast processes. He earned his Ph.D. in chemical physics in 1974 with a focus on mass spectrometric investigations of ion cluster formation. In 1992, he received his Doctor of Science (Dr.Sc.) degree from the Institute of Energy Problems of Chemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, for his work on Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT ICR) mass spectrometry. In 1994, he was awarded the title of Full Professor.

Nikolaev’s career began at the Institute of Chemical Physics, USSR Academy of Sciences, where he served as a minor staff scientist from 1974 to 1979, before advancing to senior staff scientist and later, head of the Laboratory of Magnetic Processes.
